Blind Typing and Reaction 2
Study on Feedback and Self-Control Fatigue
Brief description of study.
In the current study, we wish to examine how giving feedback to the participants will influence their self-control fatigue (ego-depletion). Therefore, we'll present participants with two tasks that require the inhibition of an habitual response. First, a blind typing task that inhibits the tendency to type words as they are written (2 groups: easy, difficult). Participants will be induced to believe that their condition assignation is random. Second, a Simon effect task (pressing a key on cue) that inhibits a lateralized response. During the second task, participants will receive objective feedback regarding their performance.
Eligibility of study
You may be eligible for this study if you meet the following criteria:
- Conditions: Healthy
-
Age: 18 years - 100 years
-
Gender: All
Inclusion Criteria
Students at IUB who have access to the experiment subject pool of the Department of Psychological and Brain Sciences are included as participants in this study.
Exclusion Criteria
They must have access to the SONA system and be enrolled in psychology classes.
This study investigates how feedback affects self-control fatigue, also known as ego-depletion. Self-control fatigue occurs when people find it harder to control their impulses after using self-control in previous tasks. Participants will engage in two tasks that test their ability to inhibit habitual responses.
The first task is a blind typing task where participants must type words differently than they appear. Participants will be divided into two study arms: easy and difficult. The second task is a Simon effect task, which involves pressing keys based on cues. During this task, participants will receive feedback about their performance.
- Who can participate: Eligible participants are students at IUB who are part of the Department of Psychological and Brain Sciences' experiment subject pool. They must also have access to the SONA system and be enrolled in psychology classes.
- Study details: Participants will complete tasks that test their ability to control habitual responses. They will receive feedback about their performance during one of the tasks.
