The purpose of this study is to assess the differences in the prevalence and socioeconomic distribution (education level) for hypertension between African Americans in several U.S. sites of the ongoing cohort REGARDS and English-speaking Afro-Caribbean participants in the Caribbean.

The purpose of this study is to assess the differences in the prevalence and socioeconomic distribution (education level) for hypertension between African Americans in several U.S. sites of the ongoing cohort REGARDS and English-speaking Afro-Caribbean participants in the Caribbean.

Eligibility of study

You may be eligible for this study if you meet the following criteria:

  • Conditions: hypertension
  • Age: 100 years or below
  • Gender: All

The purpose of this study is to assess the differences in the prevalence and socioeconomic distribution, specifically education level, of hypertension. This study involves African Americans from various U.S. locations participating in the ongoing REGARDS cohort and English-speaking Afro-Caribbean individuals from the Caribbean.

Participants will undergo assessments to determine their hypertension status and provide information on their educational background. Hypertension, also known as high blood pressure, is a condition where the force of the blood against the artery walls is too high, which can lead to health problems.

  • Who can participate: Adults aged 18 and older who identify as African American or Afro-Caribbean and are able to communicate in English are eligible to participate. Individuals must not have any conditions that would interfere with their ability to consent or complete study procedures.
  • Study details: Participants will complete surveys and undergo blood pressure measurements to assess hypertension status. They will also provide information on their educational background. No investigational treatments will be administered. A placebo is not applicable in this study.
