The effects of communication modes on L2 learners' use of epistemic devices in academic discussions
Study on Language Learning in Non-Native English Speakers
Brief description of study.
The purpose of this research is to help understand language learning.
Detailed description of study
The purpose of this study is to investigate how non-native speakers of English use epistemic devices such as hedges and intensifiers in English discussion in three communication modes: oral discussion, synchronous computer mediated communication, and asynchronous computer mediated communication.
Eligibility of study
You may be eligible for this study if you meet the following criteria:
- Conditions: healthy
-
Age: 18 years - 100 years
-
Gender: All
This study investigates how non-native English speakers use certain language tools, called epistemic devices, in English discussions. Epistemic devices include hedges, which are words or phrases used to soften statements, and intensifiers, which are words that add emphasis. The study focuses on three ways of communicating: speaking, live online communication, and delayed online communication.
Participants will engage in discussions using these communication modes while researchers observe their use of hedges and intensifiers. This will help to understand the strategies non-native speakers use when discussing in English.
- Who can participate: Participants must be non-native English speakers. Further eligibility criteria are not specified.
- Study details: Participants will take part in discussions across different communication modes while their use of language tools is observed.
