Detailed description of study

The purpose of this study is to explore facial expression changes to see if they match quality of life questionnaire response changes and to see if quality of life questionnaire responses improve after pet therapy.

Eligibility of study

You may be eligible for this study if you meet the following criteria:

  • Conditions: brain tumor
  • Age: 100 years or below
  • Gender: All

Inclusion Criteria

•    Patients with brain tumors
•    Willingness to participate in a brief pet therapy session with a dog
•    Willingness to allow photographs, pictures and audio to be used in a public art exhibit

Exclusion Criteria

•    Allergy to dogs
•    Concurrent disease or condition that would make the patient inappropriate for study participation or any serious medical or psychiatric disorder that would interfere with the subject’s safety

The purpose of this study is to explore how facial expressions change in patients with brain tumors and if these changes match improvements in quality of life as reported in questionnaires. This study investigates whether participating in pet therapy with a dog can lead to better quality of life outcomes for these patients.

Participants in the study will engage in a brief pet therapy session with a dog. During the session, researchers will take photographs and audio recordings to observe changes in facial expressions and compare them to responses from quality of life questionnaires. These materials may also be used in a public art exhibit to share findings.

  • Who can participate: Patients with brain tumors willing to participate in a brief pet therapy session and allow their photographs and audio to be used in a public art exhibit are eligible, except those with a dog allergy or serious medical/psychiatric disorders affecting safety.
  • Study details: Participants will take part in a brief investigational pet therapy session with a dog, during which their facial expressions will be recorded. The study will use these recordings to compare with quality of life questionnaire responses to assess any improvements.
