Previous research has shown that making people think about an irrelevant number before they bid on a product in a face-to-face auction influences how much they bid ? ask them to think about a high number and they bid more; ask them to think about a low number and they bid less. The purpose of this study is to understand whether the display of relevant or irrelevant numbers during an online auction will have a similar effect.

Previous research has shown that making people think about an irrelevant number before they bid on a product in a face-to-face auction influences how much they bid ? ask them to think about a high number and they bid more; ask them to think about a low number and they bid less. The purpose of this study is to understand whether the display of relevant or irrelevant numbers during an online auction will have a similar effect.

You may be eligible for this study if you meet the following criteria:

The purpose of this study is to understand whether showing numbers, either related or unrelated to the auction, affects how much people bid in online auctions. In past studies, when people were asked to think about a number before bidding in person, their bid amounts were influenced by whether the number was high or low.
Participants in this study will be shown different numbers during online auctions to see if their bids change. This study will help to learn if the number displays have a similar effect online as they do in face-to-face auctions.
- Who can participate: Adults aged 18 and over who have experience with online auctions are eligible to participate.
- Study details: Participants will be involved in online auctions where they will see numbers that may or may not relate to the auction items. They will place bids, and researchers will observe if the numbers displayed affect the bid amounts.
