COMET - Communication and Education in Tumor Profiling: A Randomized Study of Pre-Test Genetic Education v. Usual Care in Tumor Profiling for Advanced Cancer and a Pilot Study of Remote Genetic Counseling for Participants With Potential Germline Mutations Identified on Tumor Profiling
Investigating Genetic Education and Counseling for Tumor Profiling in Advanced Cancer
Brief description of study.
This research trial studies how well pre-test genetic education and remote genetic counseling works in communicating tumor profiling results to patients with advanced cancer.
Detailed description of study
The purpose of this study is to evaluate the efficacy of web-based pre-test genetic education (i.e. before receipt of tumor profile results) to increase knowledge (genetic knowledge and knowledge of test benefits and limitations); to evaluate the efficacy of web-based pre-test genetic education (i.e. before receipt of tumor profile results) to decrease distress (anxiety, depression and cancer specific worry) compared to usual care services in patients undergoing tumor profiling for advanced cancer; to evaluate the uptake of remote genetic counseling; and to evaluate the uptake of germline testing among advanced cancer patients with a potential clinically significant incidental germline mutation identified through tumor profiling in the Molecular Analysis for Therapy Choice (MATCH) trial.
Eligibility of study
You may be eligible for this study if you meet the following criteria:
- Conditions: malignant neoplasm
-
Age: 18 years - 100 years
-
Gender: All
This study investigates how pre-test genetic education and remote genetic counseling can help patients with advanced cancer understand their tumor profiling results. Tumor profiling is a way to learn about the genes in cancer cells to guide treatment decisions. The study aims to see if learning about genetics before getting results can improve knowledge about genetics and the benefits and limits of the tests.
The study will compare web-based genetic education with usual care to see if it reduces feelings of anxiety, depression, and worry about cancer. It will also check if patients choose to have remote genetic counseling and additional genetic testing if a possible important genetic change is found during tumor profiling.
- Who can participate: Patients with advanced cancer aged 18 and older who are undergoing tumor profiling can participate.
- Study details: Participants will receive web-based genetic education before their tumor profiling results. Some will also have access to remote genetic counseling.
