Determining the Prevalence of and Risk Factors for Fatty Liver in HIV Infected Individuals Attending Multiethnic Urban HIV Clinics
Investigation of Fatty Liver Prevalence in HIV-Infected Individuals
Brief description of study.
The purpose of this study is to determine the prevalence of fatty liver, diagnosed on predefined clinical laboratory and imaging criteria, among 6000 consecutive HIV infected individuals in two large US cities; to administer validated alcohol questionnaires and document alcohol consumption patterns to determine the prevalence of alcoholic vs. nonalcoholic fatty liver disease; to assess the effect of various degrees of alcohol consumption on risk of fatty liver; and to evaluate the independent effects of ART, viral factors, gene variants, and metabolic abnormalities on risk of fatty liver.

Gender: All
This study investigates the prevalence of fatty liver in individuals with HIV. Fatty liver is a condition where fat builds up in the liver, which can be diagnosed using specific laboratory tests and imaging techniques. The study will look at 6,000 people with HIV in two large cities in the United States.
Participants will answer questions about their alcohol use to help determine if their fatty liver is related to alcohol consumption or not. The study will also examine how different levels of alcohol use, as well as factors like antiretroviral therapy (ART), viruses, genetic differences, and metabolic issues, affect the risk of developing fatty liver.
- Who can participate: Participants must be adults with HIV living in the specified US cities.
- Study details: Participants will complete alcohol consumption questionnaires to assess drinking patterns. The study will use these responses to explore the link between alcohol use and fatty liver disease.
