The purpose of this study is to examine: (1) Do people hold gender stereotypes about effort and ability in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) contexts? (2) To what extent do these stereotypes help or harm people from stereotyped groups in letters of recommendation?

The purpose of this study is to examine: (1) Do people hold gender stereotypes about effort and ability in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) contexts? (2) To what extent do these stereotypes help or harm people from stereotyped groups in letters of recommendation?

You may be eligible for this study if you meet the following criteria:

This study investigates gender stereotypes in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM). It aims to understand whether people believe certain genders are more or less capable or hardworking in these fields. Gender stereotypes are preconceived ideas where females and males are arbitrarily assigned characteristics and roles determined and limited by their gender.
The study will look at how these stereotypes affect people when they are mentioned in letters of recommendation. A letter of recommendation is a document where someone describes a person's abilities and character to support their application for a job or academic position.
