Brief description of study.

In this collaborative study project, 30 patients with corneal disorders will be recruited for experiments to investigate the health of their corneal endothelium to investigate the hypothesis that endothelial dysfunction can be evaluated by characterizing the barrier and pump functions. The long term goal is to evaluate the barrier and pump functions of the corneal endothelium in Fuchs dystrophy and in keratoconus following collagen cross-linking (CxL).The current application seeks to establish a protocol for assessing the barrier and pump functions in a limited number of subjects and can be considered a pilot study towards our long term goals.

Eligibility of study

You may be eligible for this study if you meet the following criteria:

  • Conditions: corneal disorder
  • Age: 100 years or below
  • Gender: All

This study investigates the health of the corneal endothelium, which is the innermost layer of cells in the cornea, in patients with corneal disorders. The purpose is to understand how the barrier and pump functions of this layer work in conditions like Fuchs dystrophy and keratoconus, especially after a treatment called collagen cross-linking (CxL).

Participants will undergo procedures to assess the barrier and pump functions of their corneal endothelium. This involves specific tests to evaluate how well these functions are maintained in the corneal cells.

  • Who can participate: Individuals aged 18 and older with corneal disorders such as Fuchs dystrophy or keratoconus may be eligible for this study. Participants should be willing to undergo specific eye examinations.
  • Study details: Participants will be involved in tests to evaluate the barrier and pump functions of their corneal endothelium. These tests are part of a protocol to better understand these functions. A placebo is not used in this study.
