Brief description of study.

To begin clarifying stigma measurement, I propose two experiments to determine the impact of 1) person first language, and 2) personal vs. impersonal item wording on stigma attitudes, and whether 3) the participants' degree of familiarity with individuals with mental illness moderates those effects.

Eligibility of study

You may be eligible for this study if you meet the following criteria:

  • Conditions: mental illness
  • Age: 100 years or below
  • Gender: All

This study investigates how different ways of using language can affect people's attitudes towards stigma, especially related to mental illness. The purpose is to understand if using person-first language, which means putting the person before the condition (like 'person with mental illness' instead of 'mentally ill person'), changes how people think about stigma. It also looks at whether using personal or impersonal wording affects attitudes.

The study will involve experiments where participants will read different types of statements and answer questions about their attitudes. These experiments will help researchers see if people's familiarity with mental illness changes how they respond to different language styles. This means looking at whether knowing someone with mental illness makes a difference in how language affects their views.

  • Who can participate: Participants of all ages who are interested in language and mental health can join. No specific eligibility requirements are listed.
  • Study details: Participants will read statements with different language styles and answer questions about their attitudes. The study does not involve any medical treatments or interventions.
