Brief description of study.

The primary objectives of the study are to explore the microbial contamination of hands and household drinking water using indicator bacteria in children attending elementary schools in low-income communities in New Delhi and to evaluate the effectiveness of a hand washing (HW) plus safe water (SW) school intervention comparing pre to post intervention changes in hand contamination and health outcomes between three groups of schools: A) schools receiving HW plus SW education via trained teachers along with risk communication on microbial contaminants, B) schools receiving risk communication only, and C) schools without any intervention (Control).

Detailed description of study

Eligibility of study

You may be eligible for this study if you meet the following criteria:

  • Conditions: healthy
  • Age: 100 years or below
  • Gender: All

The purpose of this study is to explore how clean the hands and drinking water are for children in elementary schools in low-income areas of New Delhi. It aims to see if teaching about hand washing and safe water can reduce germs and improve health. The study involves three groups of schools: one group will receive education on hand washing and safe water from trained teachers along with information on germs, another group will only receive information on germs, and the last group will not receive any special education.

Participants in the study will have their hand cleanliness and health outcomes measured before and after the interventions. The study will compare the changes in hand cleanliness and health between the different groups of schools to see which method is most effective.

  • Who can participate: Children aged 6 to 12 attending elementary schools in low-income communities in New Delhi are eligible to participate.
  • Study details: Participants will be part of one of three groups: a group receiving hand washing and safe water education, a group receiving only risk communication, or a control group with no intervention. The study will measure changes in hand cleanliness and health outcomes.
