Brief description of study.

This study aims to compare differences in how the vocal folds vibrate and the speech sounds produced between transmasculine (female-to-male transgender) subjects taking prescribed masculinizing hormones (e.g., testosterone) and biological male and female speakers, and determine which features of voice and speech are most associated with gender identification and speaker characteristics na?ve listeners perceive when hearing habitual versus more masculinized voice productions.

Eligibility of study

You may be eligible for this study if you meet the following criteria:

  • Conditions: healthy
  • Age: 18 years - 69 years
  • Gender: All

This study investigates how the vocal cords, also known as vocal folds, vibrate and the speech sounds produced in transmasculine individuals. Transmasculine refers to people who were assigned female at birth but identify as male and may use masculinizing hormones like testosterone. The study compares these individuals to biological male and female speakers to find out which voice and speech features are linked to gender identification.

Participants will produce both their usual voice and a more masculinized voice. The study aims to understand how listeners perceive these voices and what speaker characteristics they associate with them. This involves analyzing the differences in voice and speech between the groups.

  • Who can participate: The study is looking for transmasculine individuals who are taking masculinizing hormones, as well as cisgender male and female speakers. Participants must be adults, aged 18 years or older.
  • Study details: Participants will be asked to produce different types of voice sounds. These will include their normal speaking voice and a voice that is more masculinized.
