Survey of Health and Well-Being in Advanced Cancer Patients
Study on Symptom Outcome Measures in Advanced Cancer
Brief description of study.
The primary objective of the present study is preliminary testing of our new patient-centered symptom outcome measure in advanced lung and prostate cancer patients.
Eligibility of study
You may be eligible for this study if you meet the following criteria:
- Conditions: non-small cell lung cancer, extensive stage small cell lung cancer, stage IV prostate cancer.
-
Age: 18 years - 100 years
-
Gender: All
Inclusion Criteria
• Patient is at least 3 weeks post-diagnosis of inoperable stage IIIB, IIIC, or IV non-small cell lung cancer or extensive stage small cell lung cancer. Alternatively, the patient could have stage IV prostate cancer.
• Patient receives care at an Indiana University Health University Hospital, including the Indiana University Simon Cancer Center.
• Patient has adequate English fluency for completion of consent and data collection.
• Patient is willing to participate in this study.
Exclusion Criteria
• Patient makes 3 or more errors on a validated 6-item cognitive screener or exhibits significant psychiatric or cognitive impairment (dementia/delirium, intellectual disability, active psychosis) that in the judgment of the investigators would preclude providing informed consent and study participation.
This study investigates a new way to measure symptoms in patients with advanced lung and prostate cancer. Non-small cell lung cancer is a type of lung cancer that grows and spreads slowly, while small cell lung cancer spreads more quickly. Prostate cancer affects the prostate gland in men. The purpose of this study is to understand how well patients can report their symptoms using this new measure.
Participants will be asked to complete surveys about their symptoms. These surveys will help researchers understand how patients feel and manage their symptoms. The study will take place at Indiana University Health University Hospital, including the IU Simon Cancer Center.
- Who can participate: Adults diagnosed at least 3 weeks ago with inoperable stage IIIB, IIIC, or IV non-small cell lung cancer, extensive stage small cell lung cancer, or stage IV prostate cancer can participate. Participants must receive care at an Indiana University Health University Hospital and have adequate English fluency.
- Study details: Participants will complete surveys about their symptoms to understand how they feel and manage their symptoms. They must be willing to take part in the study.
