Study on Health Needs in Young Women with Sickle Cell Disease
Brief description of study.
This study is for women with sickle cell disease (SCD) ages 14 to 24 years within Indiana University Health SCD clinics. The women and their parent or guardian will be surveyed about their knowledge and experiences for their SCD regarding pregnancy, birth control, and menstrual-related problems. Information gathered will serve as a needs assessment and help to identify areas for education within this population. The overall goal is to reduce maternal-child complications in women with SCD relating to reproductive health.

You may be eligible for this study if you meet the following criteria:
- Conditions: Sickle Cell Disease

Age: 14 years - 24 years

Gender: Female
Inclusion Criteria
Female adolescents with a diagnosis of SCD (Hemoglobin SS, SC, S-Beta+ Thalassemia, or S-Beta0 Thalassemia) between the ages of 14 to 24 years
Participant and guardian able to understand and read English
Mothers/Female Guardian (for parent survey only)
Exclusion Criteria
Do not understand English or Spanish or read English
Adolescents deemed by parent not having the mental capacity to understand and or complete the computerized questionnaire
Father/Male Guardian (for parent survey only)
This study investigates the reproductive health needs of young women with sickle cell disease (SCD). Sickle cell disease is a blood disorder where red blood cells become misshapen and can block blood flow. The study focuses on women aged 14 to 24 who attend Indiana University Health SCD clinics. The purpose is to understand their experiences and knowledge about pregnancy, birth control, and menstrual problems.
Participants and their parents or guardians will complete surveys. These surveys will gather information to identify educational needs and areas for improvement in reproductive health care. The study aims to reduce complications in maternal and child health among women with SCD.
- Who can participate: Females aged 14 to 24 with sickle cell disease, who can understand and read English, are eligible. Mothers or female guardians can also participate in the parent survey.
- Study details: Participants will complete surveys about their experiences and knowledge related to reproductive health. A parent or guardian will also complete a survey.
