Study of Mathematical Learning in Preschoolers

Investigating the Impact of Visuo-Spatial Training on Math Skills

Brief description of study.

There is considerable data to suggest a relationship between visuo-spatial processing ability and mathematical ability.  The question here is whether training on visuo-spatial tasks can lead to improvements in mathematical ability. Based on previous research, we hypothesize that children who play a competitive tabletop block building game will perform better on visuo-spatial and arithmetic tasks than children who participate in typical educational settings without competitive block play.

Eligibility of study

You may be eligible for this study if you meet the following criteria:

  • Conditions: Healthy
  • Age: 2 years - 5 years
  • Gender: All

Inclusion Criteria

Children enrolled in preschool, ages 2-5, and their parents  will participate .

The purpose of this study is to investigate whether training on visuo-spatial tasks can improve mathematical ability in children. Visuo-spatial tasks involve activities that require understanding and remembering the physical layout of objects in space, which may relate to how children understand math concepts. This study will compare children who play a competitive tabletop block building game with those who do not engage in such activities.

Participants will be involved in playing a competitive tabletop block building game. This game is designed to enhance visuo-spatial skills, which are crucial for understanding and performing arithmetic tasks. The study will measure the children's performance in both visuo-spatial and arithmetic tasks to evaluate any improvements.

  • Who can participate: Children aged 2-5 who are currently enrolled in preschool, along with their parents, are eligible to participate.
  • Study details: Participants will engage in a competitive tabletop block building game. This involves playing with blocks in a structured setting designed to improve visuo-spatial skills.
