Brief description of study.

The purpose of this study is to investigate the effectiveness of three different walking training interventions on the recovery of strength, mobility, walking and other measures of health in individuals.

Detailed description of study

The purpose of this study is to evaluate the individual and paired contributions of intensity and variability of stepping training on lower extremity (LE) function, health and community participation in patients with chronic hemiparesis post-stroke.

Participants will be compensated for their participation.

Eligibility of study

You may be eligible for this study if you meet the following criteria:

  • Age: 30 years - 85 years
  • Gender: All

Inclusion Criteria
Individuals with chronic hemiparesis post-stroke following unilateral, non-cerebellar stroke
Ability to ambulate without physical assistance over 10 ft but rom the primary rehabilitation physician to participate
Appropriately able to provide consent to participate in the study or have an identified person able to consent on their behalf
Exclusion Criteria
Significant cardiovascular, metabolic or respiratory disease that limits exercise participation
Another orthopedic or neurological disorder which limits walking ability
Patients who have participated in clinical physical therapy within the past month

This study investigates the effectiveness of three different walking training interventions on improving strength, mobility, walking, and other health measures in individuals with chronic hemiparesis after a stroke. Chronic hemiparesis is a condition where one side of the body is weak, often following a stroke. The study aims to assess how different types of walking exercises can help improve lower body function, overall health, and community involvement for these individuals.

Participants will undergo various walking training exercises that differ in intensity and variability. The study will evaluate how these exercises impact the participants' ability to move and participate in daily activities. The goal is to understand which exercise routines work best for improving the health and mobility of people with chronic hemiparesis.

  • Who can participate: Individuals who have chronic hemiparesis after a unilateral, non-cerebellar stroke and can walk 10 feet without assistance may join. They must be able to provide consent or have someone to consent for them. Key exclusion criteria include significant cardiovascular or metabolic diseases.
  • Study details: Participants will take part in different walking training exercises. Some exercises may be more intense or varied than others to see which helps most with movement and health.
