An ERP Examination of Facial Affect Recognition
Investigating Brain Activity in Facial Recognition and Personality
Brief description of study.
The purpose of this study is to examine the underlying neuronal correlates of facial recognition. We will specifically be examining how different faces correspond with brain activity and how features of personality impact the processing of faces and related brain activity.
Eligibility of study
You may be eligible for this study if you meet the following criteria:
- Conditions: schizophrenia
-
Age: 18 years - 59 years
-
Gender: All
Inclusion Criteria:
1) Between the ages of 18-59
2) Normal range or corrected to normal hearing and vision
3) Comfortable reading and writing in English
4) Free from major medical, physical, and psychological conditions (i.e. self-reported)
For the Schizotypy group only:
Personality traits such as eccentricities, unusual perceptual experiences, odd beliefs, unusual speech, lack of close relationships, suspiciousness/paranoia, isolatation
Exclusion Criteria:
1) History of Neurological and/or Neurodegenerative Disorders (i.e. self-reported)
2) History of head injury resulting in a loss of consciousness for 2 minutes or longer (i.e. self-reported)
3) History of traumatic brain injury (i.e. self-reported)
4) History of cardio vascular disease (i.e. self-reported)
This study investigates the brain's response to recognizing faces and how personality traits influence this process. Facial recognition involves identifying and understanding faces, which is a complex mental task. Researchers aim to understand the brain's activity during this task and how personality features might affect it.
Participants will undergo procedures to measure brain activity while they recognize different faces. This will help scientists see how the brain reacts to facial features and how personality traits might change this reaction.
- Who can participate: Adults aged 18 to 59 who have normal or corrected vision and hearing, can read and write in English, and are free from major medical conditions can participate. Specific personality traits such as eccentricities or unusual beliefs are considered for certain study arms.
- Study details: Participants will be asked to recognize various faces while their brain activity is monitored. This study involves examining how different facial features and personality traits affect brain responses during facial recognition tasks.
