Eligibility of study
You may be eligible for this study if you meet the following criteria:
- Conditions: smokers

Age: 18 years - 55 years

Gender: All
Able to complete and understand study questionnaires and procedures in English
Otherwise healthy male and female cigarette smokers
Right-handed
Subjects should be daily smokers (not "chippers")
Any neurological or other medical disorder which may compromise subject safety or influence study outcomes as determined by the PI
Presenting to the laboratory with a positive BrAC on the screening visit
Women who are pregnant, breast-feeding, or of childbearing potential and not using birth control
Taking any medication in the past 30 days which could influence study outcomes
Taking prescription opioid medication
Testing positive for amphetamine, cocaine, opiates, benzodiazepines, or barbiturates determined by urine toxicology screening
A history of seizures
Having no telephone or a reliable way in which study personal can contact them
Subjects who are claustrophobic and cannot tolerate imaging procedures
Subject who are contraindicated for magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) on standard IU screening forms: subjects who have metal implants, surgical devices, or other metal objects that would compromise the subject's health during the MRI
Subjects who weigh > 350 lb
Refusal or inability to refrain from smoking the day of the PET imaging study
Any reason that, in the opinion of the investigators, may put the subject at risk or that may compromise the validity or generalizability of the data
This study investigates how brain dopamine, a chemical in the brain, reacts when people smoke cigarettes. Dopamine is important for feelings of pleasure and reward. The study focuses on people who drink alcohol or smoke cigarettes to see how their brain reacts during smoking.
Participants will undergo imaging procedures to observe brain activity while smoking. Imaging procedures are tests that take pictures of the brain to see how it works. Participants will be compensated for their time and effort in the study.
- Who can participate: Healthy male and female cigarette smokers who are right-handed and can understand English are eligible. Participants must be daily smokers without neurological or medical disorders that could affect the study.
- Study details: Participants will undergo imaging procedures to observe brain activity while smoking. They must refrain from smoking on the day of the PET imaging study and should not have metal implants or other conditions that prevent MRI procedures.
- Study Timelines: The study will last approximately 10 hours over 2-3 days.
