The purpose of this research study is to compare the effect of two different types of group wellness interventions for partner caregivers of individuals with traumatic brain injury (TBI).

The Life Reentry program is a web-based grief counseling intervention that provides participants with specific strategies to help them process feelings of grief and overcome fear of the future that is associated with grief. The Life Reentry program is in growing clinical use, but its application has been primarily restricted to individuals who are adjusting to the death of a loved one. Thus, this program has not yet been applied to or studied in partner caregivers of people with TBI. Therefore, the proposed study will evaluate the effectiveness of the Life Reentry program in partner caregivers of individuals with TBI.

Detailed description of study

Depending on group assignment, participants will attend either the Life Reentry® program or a TBI Education series (“Life After TBI”) that provides information about TBI and living with disability. Both programs will involve the same treatment time (one 75-minute class per week for 6 consecutive weeks), and will be delivered online through a commercially-available teleconferencing interface (Zoom.com). Participants in both programs will be given homework assignments to encourage them to apply class content to their own lives and will have access to online forums to communicate with classmates. Classes will be recorded through the Zoom.com interface and participants will be provided view-only access to those recordings in the event that a class is missed. If a participant misses one or more classes, study staff and course instructors will assess the circumstances of those absences and the participant’s level of involvement in homework assignments and online forum activity to determine if continued participation is appropriate. Efforts will be made to accommodate participants’ situations whenever possible.

This study investigates the effects of two different wellness interventions for partner caregivers of individuals with traumatic brain injury (TBI). Traumatic brain injury is a condition where the brain is injured due to an external force, leading to various physical and mental challenges. The study aims to explore if these interventions can support caregivers in managing grief and fear associated with their caregiving roles.

Participants will be assigned to one of two study arms. One arm will attend the Life Reentry program, a web-based counseling intervention. The other arm will participate in a TBI Education series called 'Life After TBI'. Both programs involve weekly 75-minute online classes for six weeks, with additional homework assignments and access to online forums. These classes will be available through a teleconferencing platform, and recordings will be provided for missed sessions.

  • Who can participate: Adults aged 18 and older who can read and speak English fluently, have been in a relationship with a person with TBI for at least one year, care for their partner daily, and have internet access in a private location may participate. Those with certain mental health diagnoses or previous Life Reentry program participants are excluded.
  • Study details: Participants will engage in online classes once a week for six weeks, focusing on either grief counseling or TBI education. They will receive homework assignments to apply the class content and can interact with peers in online forums.
