This study investigates early warning signs of a blood cancer called multiple myeloma. Multiple myeloma is a type of cancer that begins in the bone marrow, where blood cells are made. Before developing multiple myeloma, a person's bone marrow might start producing abnormal cells and proteins, which can signal the onset of the disease.
The study involves a screening process for individuals at higher risk of developing multiple myeloma. Participants will first take a survey to determine eligibility. Those who qualify will receive a collection kit to schedule a free screening at a local lab. The lab will collect a small blood sample to check for proteins that indicate precursor conditions for multiple myeloma. All participants will be notified of their results.
- Who can participate: Adults aged 40-75 who are African American or have a family member with multiple myeloma or related conditions like MGUS, Smoldering Multiple Myeloma, or Waldenström Macroglobulinemia are eligible.
- Study details: Participants will take a survey to see if they qualify, and if eligible, receive a collection kit for a lab screening. The lab will collect a small blood sample to test for precursor conditions.
