Detailed description of study

The aims of this study are to better understand how middle grades and high school students' create and use mathematical generalizations in their reasoning, and to better understand how teachers can effectively support middle grade and high school students to create and use mathematical generalizations.

Eligibility of study

You may be eligible for this study if you meet the following criteria:

  • Conditions: Healthy
  • Age: 100 years or below
  • Gender: All

The purpose of this study is to explore how middle and high school students create and use mathematical generalizations in their reasoning. Mathematical generalizations involve finding patterns and making broad statements that apply to many situations. This study also looks at how teachers can help students use these generalizations effectively.

Participants will engage in activities that involve identifying and applying mathematical patterns. Teachers will receive guidance on strategies to support students in developing these skills. The study will observe and analyze the methods used by both students and teachers.

  • Who can participate: Middle and high school students are eligible to participate. Key eligibility includes being enrolled in a participating school and having parental consent.
  • Study details: Participants will engage in activities to identify and apply mathematical patterns, with a focus on student engagement in these tasks. Teachers will receive guidance on strategies to support students in developing these skills.
