Active Gaming: Effect on cardiorespiratory fitness and pain sensitivity
Study on the Effects of Active Video Games on Health
Brief description of study.
The purpose of this study is to determine the effect of active video games on pain sensitivity, enjoyment, and aerobic fitness including heart rate, energy expenditure, and perceived exertion.
Detailed description of study
The purpose of this study is to determine the effects of active gaming on a)cardiovascular outcomes including pulmonary gas exchange, heart rate, ratings of perceived exertion, and physical activity counts using accelerometry, b) enjoyment, and c0 pain sensitivity.
Participants will be compensated for their participation.Eligibility of study
You may be eligible for this study if you meet the following criteria:
- Conditions: Healthy
-
Age: 18 years - 79 years
-
Gender: All
Exclusion Criteria
Doctor has ever said that participant has a heart conditions and that he/she should only do physical activity recommended by a doctor
Pain in chest when doing physical activity
In past month, chest pain when not doing physical activity
Participant has ever lost balance because of dizziness or has ever lost consciousness
Bone or joint problem that could be made worse by change in physical activity
Currently on prescribed drugs for blood pressure or heart condition
This study investigates how playing active video games affects pain sensitivity, enjoyment, and fitness levels. Fitness levels include heart rate, energy use, and how hard the body feels it is working during exercise. Active video games are those that require physical movement, making them different from traditional video games that are played sitting down.
Participants will have their cardiovascular health checked, which includes how their heart and lungs work during exercise. They will also use devices to measure their physical activity. The study will look at how much participants enjoy playing the games and how these games might change their sensitivity to pain.
- Who can participate: Individuals advised by a doctor to limit physical activity due to heart conditions or who experience chest pain, dizziness, or fainting during activity are not eligible, nor are those with bone or joint problems or on medication for blood pressure or heart conditions.
- Study details: Participants will engage in active video gaming sessions with monitored heart rate and physical activity, and will report on enjoyment and changes in pain sensitivity. A placebo is not involved.
