This study investigates whether sharing information about a child's genetic risk for Type 2 diabetes can motivate parents to change their family's diet and increase their child's physical activity. Type 2 diabetes is a condition where the body does not use insulin properly, leading to high blood sugar levels. The study aims to see if knowing a child's genetic risk can influence parents to help their child maintain a healthy weight.
Participants in this study will receive information about their child's genetic risk for Type 2 diabetes. The study will observe if this information leads to changes in the child's diet, physical activity levels, and body mass index (BMI). BMI is a measure that uses height and weight to estimate if a person has a healthy body weight.
- Who can participate: Families with at least one parent and one child can participate. Parents must be 18 years or older and either have had gestational diabetes, prediabetes, or been advised by a doctor that they are overweight or obese. Children should be between 2 and 8 years old and meet criteria such as low birth weight or parental health conditions.
- Study details: Participants will receive information about their child's genetic risk for Type 2 diabetes and will be asked to use this information to potentially adjust their family's lifestyle. They will not receive any payment for participating in the study.
