This project investigates how adults and young children learn language through everyday interaction. We are interested in the role of statistical regularities in language learning and as well as the role of multimodal social cues, such as gaze, gesture, and prosody in speech, when language teachers and language learners interact with each other.

This project investigates how adults and young children learn language through everyday interaction. We are interested in the role of statistical regularities in language learning and as well as the role of multimodal social cues, such as gaze, gesture, and prosody in speech, when language teachers and language learners interact with each other.

Eligibility of study

You may be eligible for this study if you meet the following criteria:

  • Conditions: autism spectrum disorder
  • Age: 100 years or below
  • Gender: All

This study investigates how adults and young children learn language through everyday interaction. The purpose is to understand the role of statistical regularities, which are patterns that occur frequently in language, in helping individuals learn new words and grammar. Additionally, the study examines multimodal social cues, such as gaze, gesture, and prosody, which is the rhythm and pattern of sounds in speech, to see how they influence language learning.

Participants will be observed in natural settings where language teachers and learners interact. Researchers will focus on how these interactions help in language acquisition. The study will involve analyzing the frequency and type of interactions that occur, as well as the responses of the learners to these interactions.

  • Who can participate: Adults and young children who are engaged in language learning activities are eligible to participate.
  • Study details: Participants will be observed during interactions with language teachers. Researchers will analyze how often and what types of interactions occur, focusing on the responses of the learners.
